SAN ANTONIO (Nov. 22, 2016) – In its first home game of the season, the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Saints women's basketball team defeated Montana Tech 93-89 in a game that went down to the wire.
There's an old boxing saying that styles make fights, and in this case, it was certainly true. Throughout the night it was Montana Tech's potent 3-point shooting attack (ranked third in the NAIA with 9.88 3-pointers made per game) against the Saints' pressure defense, which is ranked fifth in steals per game with 14.8.
Montana Tech hit 11-for-29 from the 3-point line for a blistering 55 percent, but the Saints countered with 16 steals and 24 forced turnovers, fueling their running game.
Alyssa Ward (SR/Palmeto, Fla.) led the Saints with 28 points, nine rebounds, five steals and three assists, Julia Rendon (JR/San Antonio, Texas) drew a crucial charge with two minutes remaining and the Saints hit crucial free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
