[Softball] Saints win all top awards in conference

WACO, TEXAS (May 4, 2022) – With teams preparing for the start of the Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) softball tournament tomorrow, the conference announced the 2022 RRAC All-Conference Team and player of the year awards. Coaches determined the selections, with those on the first team being eligible for NAIA All-America consideration at the completion of the season. 

2022 RRAC Softball All-Conference Team

Coming off a season where it had a 24-game win streak and earned its highest ranking in program history, NAIA No. 17 OLLU placed five players on the first team and monopolized the player of the year honors. The Saints' Cassandra Valdez (JR/Brownsville, Texas) garnered a rare double as RRAC Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year. Madison Nunn (SR/Cibolo, Texas) repeated as the Defensive Player of the Year, and Rebecca Duran (SR/Austin, Texas) was recognized as the Newcomer of the Year. Bruce Lenington was selected as the Coach of the Year. 

Houston-Victoria landed four players on the first team, while Huston-Tillotson, Louisiana Christian, Texas A&M-San Antonio, and Texas A&M-Texarkana received two first-teamers each. 

OLLU's Joanna Gonzalez (SR/San Benito, Texas) and Nunn received first-team honors for the second straight year. Joining Valdez, Gonzalez and Nunn on the first team are Kayla Dreese (SR/San Antonio, Texas) and Ariel Montgomery (SR/Castroville, Texas). Caitlin Terrazas (SR/Atascosa, Texas) was selected to the second team and Katelyn Esparza (JR/San Antonio, Texas) is her team's Champions of Character winner.
